God is still speaking

"God is still speaking"

To the congregation of Evangelical United Church of Christ, this is not just a statement of faith, it’s a call to action. In our actions as a congregation, we embody the idea that God is still speaking in ways that matter to and “speak” to the people of faith in and beyond St. Louis.

In addition, “God is still speaking” means we will engage people within their culture, respect people's spiritual experiences, and provide a lively, diverse spiritual community to accompany each and every individual on his or her faith journey.

This spiritual foundation was underscored and verbalized in the results of a survey recently conducted by our capital campaign committee as a tool to help assess our mission and needs.

While many impassioned comments were collected from the survey on a variety of topics, a recurrent theme emerged as a guiding impression of this church we share: There is a pervasive sense of pride rooted in this church’s history in this community, as well as a commitment to inclusiveness and mission outreach.

Virtually all survey participants acknowledged that continuing this tradition should be our first priority. In fact, a substantial majority of respondents expressed a desire that our congregation expand our outreach ministries.

It’s our time to step forward.

However, for years, the physical structure upon which we built these beliefs and programs has slowly been crumbling. The maintenance of our base of operations, this church itself, has been put on hold in favor of spending money for aid elsewhere, to meet the needs of the many.

Today, this has begun to impact our capacity to sustain our ministry. The functional configurations of our facilities currently limit our abilities to expand outreach while maintenance issues slowly drain our financial resources. The time has come to rectify this situation. To prepare our base of operations to not only grow but to also sustain our ability to demonstrate to the wider community that God is still speaking. We owe this to our community. We owe this to ourselves.

For 89 years, Evangelical United Church of Christ has been the recipient of grace upon grace with a vibrant congregation that continues to grow and reach out. Our current church facility—literally and spiritually—has provided the opportunity for that growth. We want to build upon this foundation and embrace the future with an open “imagination” of what God wants to accomplish through the Evangelical United Church of Christ. We are the heirs, the beneficiaries of those who came before us. Now it is our turn to equip EUCC for future ministries.

It’s our time…
